For the cost of the basic kit (+ shipping and taxes) the Fusion 40 kit comes complete with extremely easy to follow build plans leaving no guess work. If you can follow the instructions of your average flat pack kitchen base unit you can build a Fusion in your own time and your own pace.
If you are in a hurry, it is possible with the aid of three friends to assemble the kit from “out of the box” to shell stage within 14 days.
If you built and Airfix model as a lad you could build a Fusion with your eyes shut. It’s harder to lose the little bits and the glue is stronger!
The kit itself is fairly basic for a reason as it just includes hull and bridge deck, internal bulkheads, molded floors, etc.
Fusion do offer all of the components to build the completed catamaran as optional extras.
The reason for this is that many of the components such as window glass or saloon doors, electronics etc can be sourced locally at less cost without the shipping.
Internal moldings are also an extra in the form of a flat pack option which can be purchased and shipped in the containers at the same time as purchase of the main kit. However many home builders prefer to design and build their own layout and make up their own “splashes” for the internal moldings. Of course it is nice to use new parts throughout the build depending on your personal wealth but as the component car builders search round scrap yards and refurbish major parts it would be just as easy to hunt around boat jumbles, scavenge round boat yards, skips and scan E-bay and recondition parts to complete your boat extremely economically.
Building a Fusion from scratch will depend a lot on your location, space and how your access is limited by road or access to the water, river or estuary to the open sea.
Many owners enjoy the build more than they do sailing and it is more than possible to purchase a kit and finish it to a higher standard than even the factory can.
When the finished pride and joy is finally launched, all the hard work has been worth it, just stand back and take a look at your work, see the wind fill the sails for the first time, wow what a boat!
It is also possible to purchase your Fusion and have it build by your own local boat builder or we can assemble it to shell stage on site for you at a cost.
“What’s in the Kit”?
The most common question asked by our clients is “What’s in the Kit”?
Simply speaking, virtually everything you need to assemble the Fusion to a shell stage is inside the two containers. Port and Starboard hulls, non- slip decks, saloon section, transom steps, cockpit section, provision for moulded fuel and water and holding tanks.
We include things like pre-assembled rudders, internal tank liners and floors, pre-made mini keels, the gel coated targa bar, all external gel coat hatches with non-slip permanently moulded during the manufacturing stage.
The rudders even come with the stainless steel rudder stocks polished and ready for installation. There is also a glass fibre gangplank dividing the nets and bowsprit , again with the non slip decking already in the moulding process. Infused floors, bearers, bulkheads, (This includes the mast compression bulkhead) also infused flat panels for interior major bulkheads.
These are the few little big things that place the Fusion at the leading edge!
All of the parts are CE 100A Ocean going certified, and each of the parts are totally resin infused using 100% Vinyl Ester throughout the whole structure. Which means absolutely no chance of Osmosis.
Also we use only the best foam cores and woven glass fabrics in our components.
Yes the kit is expensive, but this is because we made the decision that rather than compete on price by using cheaper options we feel that our clients would prefer to pay slightly more to ensure that at sea that they know that they have the peace of mind knowing that their investment and family are safe in any conditions due to the high quality, thought and care that Fusion put into their kit.
The kit can be highly customised and many owners put their own personal stamp on their own finished Fusion. There are many good imaginative ideas with owners sharing through Forums and contact helping you to build your Fusion Catamaran.
